MAINTAINING INFECTION CONTROL IN AN ACTIVE HEALTHCARE ENVIRONMENT

The Nabholz team worked closely with St. Bernards’ infection control staff to develop site-specific Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) plans for each phase of work on the new surgery tower. Airtight containment barriers and anterooms were erected to isolate construction areas, while negative air machines with HEPA filtration-maintained pressure differentials and removed airborne particles. Daily monitoring verified airflow direction and ensured that no dust, debris, or contaminants reached patient spaces.

Phased scheduling allowed construction to progress one bay at a time, with much of the work taking place at night to reduce disruption. Moisture controls and waterline disinfection procedures minimized the risk of mold or bacterial growth, and sealed debris removal pathways prevented cross-contamination in hospital corridors. All subcontractors were required to undergo infection control training and commit to these protocols before entering sensitive areas.

Through this disciplined approach, Nabholz completed the tower on schedule, on budget, and without infection-related incidents. The project strengthened St. Bernards’ capacity to deliver critical care while proving that new facilities can be built safely alongside ongoing patient operations.
