Columba Regional Airport's new terminal addition was made possible as a design-build project with close collaboration between Nabholz, the owner, and the architect.
The airport stayed operational during construction, requiring the Nabholz team to take unique precautions to ensure the safety of visitors and staff while also following FAA regulations and TSA procedures.

MAINTAINING AIRPORT OPERATIONS DURING TERMINAL CONSTRUCTION
Working on an active campus requires careful attention to existing operations and civilian safety.
One way Nabholz tackled this challenge was by sequencing a new roadway to connect the new terminal with the existing airport. The roadway granted access to the construction site and was supplemented by temporary walkways, fencing, and parking separation to allow safe passage and reduce safety risks on the active campus. These safety measures also separated construction work conducted on the airfield from the active terminals with airline and tug traffic. This allowed the airport to continue operations safely even while construction occurred.
Another challenge was the project’s need for advanced permits and security measures. Nabholz proactively communicated any change in location or schedule to all relevant parties, allowing ample time for early reviews and approvals. This ensured all regulations and safety procedures were adhered to, minimizing the risk to airport staff and visitors as construction proceeded. In addition, enhanced security protocols were implemented for all areas of work based on strict TSA procedures regarding the secure and non-secure sides of the airfield.
With close communications between Nabholz, the owner, and other involved parties, our team successfully delivered the Columbia Regional Airport’s new terminal with zero OSHA reportable incidents — all while maintaining ongoing campus operations.
