Our Safety Record

In the 75+ years Nabholz has been in business, our employee count and manhours have grown exponentially — and with that, more challenges have arisen to maintain our safety record. The more people are on a job site, the more chances there are for an incident to occur.

So how do we keep our Experience Modification Rate (EMR) lower than industry average? Simple: our tireless commitment to safety.

Nabholz is dedicated to protecting all employees, clients, and community members on our job sites. We never place anything over the safety of our team members — not schedule, profit, or production — and we refuse to believe that accidents are an inevitability in our line of work.

As a result, we have created a rigorous safety program that prioritizes training and empowers our workers to choose safety first.

Key Safety Programs

Safety Helmets

In 2024, Nabholz shifted from using hardhats to requiring safety helmets with a chin strap on all job sites, and in 2026 required all subcontractors to do the same while working on Nabholz job sites. By wearing safety helmets, the risk of head injuries is greatly reduced in the case of an accident.

Lessons Learned

Nabholz’s Lessons Learned system captures valuable knowledge employees learn on the job and shares those lessons across the company. By sharing experiences where a difficult challenge was overcome, employees can help others avoid the same mistakes and navigate obstacles more effectively. This program is a cornerstone of our continuous improvement efforts, driving quality and innovation across our projects.

SmartTagIt

Nabholz utilizes SmartTagIt, a program that helps identify and eliminate potential safety hazards on a project to prevent jobsite injuries. The program helps with Task Hazard Analysis (THA) planning, making it easy to share and collaborate on THA with other team members.

Health & Wellness Program

Safety doesn’t just stop when our workers leave the job site — it also includes their physical and mental wellness. Our wellness program ensures our employees have the resources available to take preventative exams and receive any healthcare they or their spouse may need.

Commitments to Live By®

Nabholz’s Commitments to Live By (C2LB)® safety program was launched in 2015 to confront head-on 12 high-risk activities that can lead to serious injuries on job sites. Our C2LB program includes videos, posters, helmet stickers, toolbox talks, wristbands, flipbooks, and more — all distributed to our team continuously. What’s more, we’ve made it personal — our team members sign the following commitment to stay safe in their work:

“I commit to staying alive today, tomorrow, and throughout this project. I make this commitment because my life matters to my family, to my friends, and to me.”

I Stop Unsafe Work

I Stop Unsafe Work is a policy that states that every person on a Nabholz project is responsible for the safety and quality of a job. As such, everyone has the authority and obligation to stop any unsafe work practice or to point out any unsafe conditions. Each person has a card verifying this authority with the signatures of the CEO and region president endorsing their decisions.

Good Catch Program

The Good Catch Program recognizes and rewards employees who find and correct conditions or actions that could result in an injury or incident. A Good Catch identifies and then eliminates a potential hazard or incident prior to the occurrence. The point of the program is to promote safety and prevent incidents, not to punish anyone for hazards on site. QR codes are posted around job sites that take workers to a form to submit a Good Catch.

I'm A Believer

The I'm A Believer award is given to employees who work to achieve zero accidents. Their actions and attitude encompass Nabholz’s safety culture, they champion Nabholz’s safety policies and adopt a personal responsibility for their team’s safety as well as their own.
