Building My Future

Taking Learning From the Classroom to the Field

Blake Armer started his career in construction as a high school student. After a Nabholz representative visited his construction class at Conway High School, Armer decided to join Nabholz as a Youth Apprentice.

Created in partnership with local school districts, the Youth Apprenticeship Program gives students ages 16-18 an opportunity to work directly for Nabholz while continuing their education. Through hands-on experience, students can build their skills and explore career opportunities in construction before entering the workforce full time.

“Hands-on experience has really shown me how many different pathways there are in construction, which has helped me decide what I want to do with my future,” Armer said.

From Youth Apprentice to Intern

Today, Armer is a part-time intern in the Nabholz mill shop while continuing his education at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

“In my day-to-day, I’ll start with checking my email, submitting bids that are due that day, and then I will create shop drawings for our guys to base off of. I will submit submittals to a general contractor or owner, and then I will send invoices to our guys.”

Growing up, Armer wanted to be a doctor because he wanted to help people. Over time, he realized how much he enjoyed building things and working with his hands.

“Through Nabholz, I have been able to help people and build stuff.”

Armer’s path from Youth Apprentice to college student and Nabholz intern shows what early exposure to construction can provide. By giving students opportunities to learn on the job, the Youth Apprenticeship Program helps young people explore the industry, develop their skills, and begin building a career. The future of the construction industry sits in classrooms today, ready for the exposure and experiences that programs like the Youth Apprenticeship program can provide.
