One of a handful of entities that independently operate the electric power grid, the Southwest Power Pool wanted to develop a campus to bring all their employees and operations center into one location. This massive undertaking included constructing three separate, large structures on rolling terrain in a limited amount of time.
The first structure — a 36,750-square-foot hardened operations and data center — needed to be operational just 15 months into the project. It was designed to withstand an F-4 tornado and included a partial mechanical basement.
A 166,920-square-foot, four story office building was the next primary focus, featuring sunshade systems throughout, terrazzo flooring in the lobby, wood wall accents, limestone tile coverings, and open glass handrails on the lobby stairs. Another unique feature to the otherwise administrative building is a top-floor penthouse. A 600-space parking deck was completed simultaneously with the office building.
Also of significance are the sustainability features of the office building and parking deck, which are registered with the certification goal of LEED Gold.
