The Citizens Bank building in downtown Jonesboro was first built in the 1950s. It was vacated in 2000 and, since then, no one has used the seven-story building. September 2024, the City of Jonesboro closed a portion of Main Street after a bulge on the building’s eastern side was discovered. The building was then evaluated by engineering experts, who ruled it as a public safety hazard.
The city approached Nabholz to safely demolish the building in a way that would protect nearby businesses and pedestrians, prevent air quality contamination, and quickly get Main Street open again. Our team prioritized safety throughout the project and utilized a wet demolition method to minimize environmental hazards during construction.
The scope included:
- Comprehensive pre-demolition assessments to determine safe demolition methods
- Asbestos abatement
- Controlled dismantling of the seven-story building while minimizing dust impact on surrounding properties
- Erected scaffolding in the alley between the bank and an active business to remove brick by hand, preventing debris from falling on adjacent structures
- Wrapping adjected building with visqueen to keep dust out and placing weighted plywood sheets on the roof to prevent damage from any falling materials
