Opening Doors to a Stronger Construction Workforce

Turning Opportunity Into a Career

Opening the door is only the beginning. Building a stronger workforce also means giving people opportunities to keep learning after they walk through it.

That philosophy has deep roots at Nabholz.

In 1973, Nabholz established what would become Nabholz University through an in-house carpentry apprenticeship program. Today, Nabholz University has grown to include craft excellence, project execution, and leadership development programs, along with mentorship and other learning opportunities.

Our apprenticeship programs combine education with real-world experience, allowing employees to continue working while developing the skills necessary to advance in their craft.

That includes our four-year Carpentry Apprenticeship Program as well as our Millwright Apprenticeship Program, which combines structured coursework with more than 8,000 hours of on-the-job training. Both follow apprenticeship models recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor and are available to more than just Nabholz employees.

More than 800 Nabholz employees have now graduated from a Nabholz University program.

The goal isn’t simply to prepare someone for the job they have today. It’s to give people opportunities to continue building their skills, taking on new challenges, and create careers to grow our people for a better tomorrow.

Creating a Workplace Where People Can Thrive

Recruiting and training people only solves part of the workforce challenge. Keeping great people requires something more — a workplace where people know they matter.

In construction, we often talk about looking out for one another in terms of physical safety. We identify hazards, speak up when something isn’t right, and rely on the people around us to help everyone go home safely.

That responsibility extends to our overall well-being.

Construction can be demanding. Long hours, changing schedules, travel, time away from family, and pressures both on and off the job can take a toll. Supporting the people doing this work means recognizing that mental health and wellness are part of taking care of our workforce, too.

At Nabholz, that support takes several forms. Our Health & Wellness Program provides resources designed to support employees and their families, while accessible healthcare options help remove barriers to receiving care. Just as importantly, we continue working to foster a culture where people look out for one another.

Sometimes that can be as simple as noticing when a coworker isn’t themselves, checking in, listening, or helping connect someone with support.

A strong workplace is one where people can do good work, continue growing, ask for help when they need it, and know the people around them have their back.

Construction has always been a people business. Buildings, roads, hospitals, schools, and manufacturing facilities may be what we leave behind, but people are what make every project possible.

During Construction Inclusion Week, the industry comes together to consider how we can strengthen that workforce by introducing more people to the opportunities our industry provides.

At Nabholz, we are committed to creating pathways for people to build meaningful careers and fostering workplaces where people feel respected, supported, and able to grow.

Those ideas aren’t limited to one week. They connect directly to something we’ve believed for generations: when we invest in people, we strengthen our company, our industry, and the communities we serve.

Opening the Door to Construction Careers

The construction industry’s need for skilled workers continues to grow. Meeting the needs of the growing workforce requires more than filling today’s open positions. It means introducing people to construction earlier, showing them the variety of careers available, and providing meaningful ways to get started.

That’s why Nabholz teams work with schools, colleges, career and technical education programs, and community organizations throughout the areas we serve. Employees participate in career fairs, construction expos, classroom visits, trade days, and educational programs designed to give students a closer look at the industry.

Our Youth Apprenticeship Program takes that connection a step further. Developed in partnership with local school districts, the program gives students ages 16–18 an opportunity to work alongside construction professionals while they’re still in high school.

College internships provide another entry point. Students from all walks of life, region, and college major gain hands-on experience in project management, preconstruction, and field operations while learning directly from experienced professionals.

These programs do more than introduce students to Nabholz. They help young people see that construction offers many ways to build a career — in the field, in an office, through skilled trades, in technology, or in leadership.
